American’s Stonehenge, aka Mystery Hill, in Salem, New Hampshire is seemingly an enigma. Having personally visited this site about a half-dozen times, there is always something else intriguing that you learn.
It’s builders remain unclear. There are standing stones over a sprawling 30+ acre site that have many astronomical alignments with the stars and includes several different chambers among them, “the Oracle Chamber”. There is also a stone table shrouded in lore, dubbed the, “sacrificial table”.
Native American artifacts have been found; shackles have been discovered and described as remnants of freed slaves traveling the underground railroad which this very spot is alleged to have been on the route to freedom in Canada. There are some petroglyphs with Phoenician writing alluding to Baal and a connection to European knights, Vikings, and/or Celts from hundreds of years before colonization. The story is fascinating and speculation can be quite wild.
This is one of the most elaborate sites in New England, but there are many stone chambers and mounds throughout this region of the United States. They all pose interesting archaeological questions about who built them, when, and for what purposes. I’ll probably be adding more posts related to this subject as I find it interesting as a doorway to a hidden past.
